An Introduction to the Throat Chakra
Our name, Chakra, is inspired by the ancient Chakra System which is composed of energetic centers that act as generators of spiritual power/energy in the human body. The Chakras are used to draw in and expend energy both within and around the human energetic field. Although the concept of the Chakric System has existed for centuries, it is as relevant today for aligning the mind-body connection as it was thousands of years ago (arguably even more so, since the dawn of technology and other chakra disturbances we did not face in 500 B.C.!).
In the month of June, we continue our exploration of the Chakra System by engaging the fifth energy center in the human energetic field: the Throat Chakra. Also known as Vishuddha, the Throat Chakra is located between the clavicle bones at the thyroid in the base of the throat.
The Sanskrit name for the Throat Chakra is Vishuddha which comes from a synthesis of “shuddhi” meaning pure and “vi” meaning magnification. Vishuddha, therefore, translates literally to “essentially pure”. The Throat is associated with communication, authenticity, higher truths and self-expression.
Resonating with the Water Element, Vishuddha governs the communicative realms of expression and expressive response. Known as the “sound center” the Throat Chakra bridges the heart and the mind through a sharing of one’s ideas, dreams & emotions. The Throat Chakra reminds us of the importance of being heard and understood and is the greatest energetic center of self-expression & relfection.
In the modality of Human Design, the Throat Chakra is considered to be a primary manifestation center, influencing one’s ability to share their heart’s desires, dreams and true emotion with others. It is the source of sound vibration and instills the power of free-flowing speech.
When Vishuddha is blocked or unbalanced, we may experience a weak voice (both physically & metaphorically), an inability to speak one’s truth or one’s mind and have difficulty with compassionate listening and the ability to remain quiet or be alone.
There are several ways to balance and open the Throat Chakra, including breathwork, sound bathing, vocal tuning & singing and journaling on ideas they may be challenging to say out loud with a confident voice.
Now that you have a better understanding of the Throat Chakra how do you activate this sound-centric energy? We’ll leave you with a few practical ways to activate and strengthen your Throat Chakra, here.
